posted on by Andrew Osmond
The U.K. Your Screen website is hosting seven Japanese films in a season called "Beyond Kurosawa," including two anime films, Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue and Yasuhiro Yoshiura's Patema Inverted. Both films are available free until Tuesday November 30 and can be rented afterwards until December 24.
Set in contemporary Tokyo, Satoshi Kon's 1997 film Perfect Blue (right) depicts the mental breakdown of an idol singer turned actress. She believes she is being stalked, while being tormented by visions of a double of herself. The film was the feature director debut of Kon, who went to make Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent and Paprika.
Yasuhiro Yoshiura's 2013 film Patema Inverted involves Patema, a girl from an underground community, who discovers a world where everything is upside down, and she is in great peril of "falling" into the sky.
The live-action films in Your Screen's "Beyond Kurosawa" season include the 1967 crime film Branded to Kill (free until Tuesday), the 1964 horror film Onibaba and the 2021 SF comedy Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.
This season is part of the British Film Institute's ‘Japan 2021’ project.
