Whistle! Anime's 'Voice Remake' Reveals New Cast Members, December 17 Streaming Debut

The first 2017 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is revealing on Monday that the "voice remake" of the 2002 television anime of Daisuke Higuchi's Whistle! soccer manga will begin streaming on December 17. The anime will stream on the Anime Hodai, UNEXT, d Anime Store, dTV, and Geo Channel services.
In addition, the issue reveals that Yui Makino will voice the character Yuki Kojima (Masami Suzuki previously played the character), and that she will perform a remake of the ending theme song "Sweet Days" (Minako Komukai originally performed the song in 2002).
The issue also reveals the following 10 new cast members, who are all different from the 2002 cast:
- Shintarou Oohata as Masato Takai
- Seiichirō Yamashita as Yoshihiko Koga
- Shunichi Maki as Hideomi Hanazawa
- Rie Kugimiya as Hiroyoshi Noro
- Kōtarō Nishiyama as Yūsuke Morinaga
- Kengo Kawanishi as Mamoru Tanaka
- Seijun Tamura as Ippei Toyama
- Yoji Ikuta as Kaoru Gomi
- Yuko Sanpei as Santa Yamaguchi
- Ayaka Nanase as Miyuki Sakurai
The new cast joins the previously revealed cast, who are also different from the 2002 cast:
- Shun Horie as Shō Kazamatsuri
- Shinnosuke Tachibana as Tatsuya Mizuno
- Ryōsuke Kanemoto as Shigeki Satō
- Takuya Eguchi as Daichi Fuwa
Marvelous previously streamed a promotional video previewing the new voice cast in August.
Yushio will perform the opening theme song "DOUBLE WIND" (Minako Komukai originally performed the song in 2002).
Whistle! centers on Sho Kazamatsuri, a boy who wants to play soccer, but is prohibited by his short stature. He transfers to a different school, hoping to join a soccer team with a different point of view. There, he hones his skills and struggles to earn acceptance to the soccer team while dealing with his height disadvantage.
Higuchi serialized the manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1998 to 2002. Shueisha released 24 compiled book volumes for the series. Viz Media released all 24 volumes in English from 2004 to 2010, and released the manga digitally from 2013 to 2014. Higuchi launched a new Whistle! manga series on September 26 with new protagonists. MangaOne, the app for Shogakukan's web comic magazine Ura Sunday, began reserializing the Whistle! manga in April.
A stage play ran from August 31 to September 8 in Tokyo.
