Eva Store's Character Popularity Poll Yields Surprising Results

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Store allowed patrons to vote on Eva pilots based on individual film appearances

The Evangelion Store celebrated its 13th anniversary on December 15 with a poll that didn't just break down Hideaki Anno's film series by character but also by individual film. The options were limited to Evangelion Unit pilots only (sorry Pen Pen) and voters were also entered into a lottery to win a set of 13 can badges of all the character choices.

With the character choices limited, the poll came down to Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Kaworu, and Mari. Fans of Evangelion can be pretty invested in the Rei, Asuka or Kaworu debate but when it came down to number of votes no one could beat Asuka's appearance in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. Asuka's appearance in the second film garnered 2,187 votes.

In second place with approximately 200 fewer votes is Kaworu from Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and trailing way, way behind is Rei with just 252 votes from Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. The Eva Store didn't provide vote numbers for the rest of the choices.

The full results are:

  1. Asuka (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance): 2,187 votes
  2. Kaworu (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo): 1,871 votes
  3. Rei (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance): 252 votes
  4. Asuka (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo)
  5. Shinji (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance)
  6. Rei (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone)
  7. Kaworu (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance)
  8. Shinji (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone)
  9. Mari ( Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance)
  10. Mari (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo)
  11. Shinji (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo)
  12. Rei (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo)
  13. Kaworu (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone)

The Evangelion franchise has inspired numerous spinoffs, merchandise, and collaborations. Anno, the director of the anime, founded Studio Khara in 2006. He and the studio began producing a new tetralogy of films titled Rebuild of Evangelion, which reinterprets the events in the series. The tetralogy began with Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone in 2007, followed by Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :|| (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0), the final film, is currently in production.

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion television anime and films will be available to stream on Netflix this spring.
