Former Fruits Basket Voice Actor Tomokazu Seki Approves of the New Anime's Casting
posted on by Kim Morrissy
It was recently announced that the new Fruits Basket anime, which will air in 2019, will have an entirely new staff and voice cast due to manga artist Natsuki Takaya's request. "Please rebuild the Furuba world from scratch, with new everything," she reportedly told the producers.
The original manga inspired a television anime adaptation in 2001. The prospect of a remake with new voice actors has at least one of the voice actors from the original anime excited. Tomokazu Seki, who played Kyo in the original Fruits Basket anime, shared his comments about the new anime on Twitter.

"A Furuba remake has been announced! I'm looking forward to the new Furuba! This title has continued to receive love over time. I felt its power then and I can feel it now! I put my all into this title back then, and I'm cheering for it now, waiting to see how it will be reborn!"
Voice actor Nobunaga Shimazaki, who plays Yuki in the new anime, responded to Seki's tweet, saying, "Seki-san...! Thank you so much! I'll give it my all!"
Seki replied: "Yay! I'm looking forward to a cast that I can trust! Have fun playing [Yuki]!"
The rest of the new cast includes Manaka Iwami (Tsuki ga Kirei's Aira Miyamoto, Maquia's titular character, Tada Never Falls in Love's Teresa Wagner) as Tohru Honda; Yūma Uchida (Macross Delta's Hayate Immelmann, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans' Ein Dalton, Banana Fish's Ash Lynx) as Kyo Sohma; and Yūichi Nakamura (Fairy Tail's Gray Fullbuster, The irregular at magic high school's Tatsuya Chiba, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind's Bruno Bucciarati) as Shigure Sohma.
Takaya serialized the original Fruits Basket manga in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine from 1998-2006. Tokyopop released the manga in English from 2004 to 2009, and Yen Press re-released the manga in 12 updated omnibus volumes beginning in June 2016. Yen Press describes the story:
After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out...into a tent! Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn't long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own--when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac!
