Shout! Factory announced at its panel at Comic Con International on Friday that it will release a 30th anniversary steelbook limited edition for Transformers: The Movie. The company will also release the film on standard edition Blu-ray Disc and DVD. All three editions are slated for September 13.
Shout! Factory is creating a remaster of the film for the release, which includes a new 4K transfer of the original 35mm film elements. The 30th anniversary steelbook limited edition and the standard Blu-ray Disc edition will feature two Blu-ray Discs with the film in both widescreen and full frame formats, while the DVD release will have the film in widescreen.
The releases will also include the original English audio with 5.1 surround sound.
All three editions will include a digital copy of the film, and will also include a documentary on the film, featurettes about art and restoration, trailers and TV spots, animated storyboards, and audio commentary with director Nelson Shin, story consultant Flint Dille and voice actress Susan Blu.
Shout! Factory describes the film:
The AUTOBOTS, led by the heroic OPTIMUS PRIME, prepare to make a daring attempt to retake their planet from the evil forces of MEGATRON and the DECEPTICONS. Unknown to both sides, a menacing force is heading their way – UNICRON. The only hope of stopping UNICRON lies within the Matrix of Leadership and the AUTOBOT who can rise up and use its power to light their darkest hour. Will the AUTOBOTS be able to save their native planet from destruction or will the DECEPTICONS reign supreme?
Toei Animation animated the 1986 film as a sequel to the first animated television seasons of The Transformers. The animated series is based on Hasbro's toy line, which itself imported toys from Takara's Diaclone and Microman toy lines, among others.
