I hope they announce the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime. I've been waiting on that one.

Has a franchise looked more haggard and irrelevant than the Gundam franchise at 35?

It breaks my heart to see it in such bad shape. After the horrendous CE era, decent-but-not-great 00, the utter failure of AGE (which even in Japan seemed to be met with a resounding "eh") and a f***ing Gunpla video game show, it looks like a chewed up chunk of diseased meat sizzling on a torn up stretch of highway with flies and gnats buzzing around it under the scorching summer sun.

If it weren't for Unicorn, I'd say shove it into a casket and throw it in a hole. If they have to resort to doing a remake of 0079 to revive it, it's done. Even Yas can't save it.

Well, when Sunrise did the 30th anniversary, we got Unicorn & AGE(so one bad, one good).

Maybe work on that Seed movie that they supposedly were going to work on. Plus would make sense with Seed & Seed Destiny getting the HD treatment the past few years.

But I've got a feeling that it'll probably be that the Origin is getting an anime adaptation.

I blame it on AGE & Build Fighters being absolutely horrible. Sunrise tried to market to a different group and it just didn't work out.

The Unicorn OVAs & Origin manga seem to be the only things keeping it relevant to people that care about the franchise.

I know that AGE is total shit, but why saying Build Fighters is that bad? I keep enjoying every episodes each week, and I love every character. I got to admit, it's not like other Gundam's seasons, but it's good spin-off, right?

The Gundam fans that hate it usually hate it because 1. it's not a traditional Gundam show and 2. it's skewed to a younger demographic. With both of those things in mind, though, it's a good show. It's got a good balance between characterization, plot development and action. It also doesn't hurt that it's written by the guy that wrote Gundam 00. While I wouldn't call it one of the best shows of the season or anything, it's very entertaining, even more so if you like all the Gundam references. Let's not forget that Gundam shows have an extremely inconsistent track record, so all the fan rage seems a little silly.

Poor poor Penguintruth. You simply can't handle the fact that the Gundam Franchise is in great shape. It's just not centered anymore on the old, UC timeline.
Seriously man, Gundam Build Fighters is a great success. It takes itself lightly, has great episodes, good fighting, likeable characters. And it captures the quintessence of Gundam. In fact it is such a success that a second season is already planed. Gundam Build Fighters is nothing like AGE, and Sunrise took the lessons of that failure to heart. Build Fighters is one of the funniest most approachable gundam series since Turn A.

But didn't AGE have 49 episodes?

Sure, but the ratings were abysmal and the merchandise didn't sell. Sunrise tried to course correct the series but it simply didn't work out.
I mean if catering to a young demographic was the only reason for AGE's failure then it stands to reason that Build Fighters would also fail. Instead that's not what is happening. And many so-called Gundam fans will not admit, even under torture that Build Fighters is actually a good Gundam series. And it shows, the audience is there, the merchandise sells like hot cakes. So Sunrise is definitely doing something right.

A franchise cannot survive without new blood. Once the old "UC" dies out, Gundam is doomed (if Sunrise followed Penguintruth's idea of dismissing every timeline except the UC). So getting in new viewers, and youngsters that actually care about Gundam is a GOOD thing.

I don't care if it's UC or not, I just want a show thats nothing like Build Fighters.

I'm sure Build Fighters is a good kids show, but I'm not a kid. Seeing cameo suits in some nice action scenes is cool, but I just don't care about the surrounding story. It's not for me. I like the war stories of Gundam shows and I hope the next show is back to being one of those.

The Gundam: the Origin anime is Sunrise's worst-kept secret at this point, but with the Unicorn OVA about to end and the franchise's 35th Anniversary coming up, I guess they might finally make a proper announcement.

I agree with both of you. Build Fighters may be dumb, but it works because it doesn't take itself too seriously like AGE, nor expects viewers to be thrilled and surprised by a barrage of clichés and moments rehashed from better Gundam shows. It's Angelic Layer with Gundams, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than that. Also, its comedic and romantic elements are surprisingly effective.

Well, first of all, don't put words in my mouth (fingers?). I never said a Gundam show had to be in the UC timeline to be good.

But Gundam Build Fighters is the most brazen pap I've seen come out of this franchise yet. The premise lends itself solely to merchandise. Exclusively to it. I'm not naïve, I know Gundam has been a toy commercial for 35 years, but GBF is just waving it in your face and has no other palpable qualities beyond its marketing potential.

The premise doesn't even make sense. Why would building a good model translate to it being good in the video game they plug it into? Why not just enter with a Turn A Gundam or a Devil Gundam and completely obliterate all competition? How does losing in the game translate to damage to the model? Why do they even need the gunplay to play the game? It's all so meaningless.

It's a terrible show and shows that all Gundam has become is a merchandising vehicle for Bandai. A really bad one.

As for your UC "old blood" comment... UC is Gundam. I enjoy AU shows like G Gundam and Turn A. But UC is the franchise's lifeblood.

Before someone replies "Gundam was always a toy commercial" lets get it out of the way.

Yes, it was always a toy commercial. That still didn't stop it from attempting to tell all ages war stories with an actual logical(sometimes anyway) narrative. Gundam shows still had actual stories that people who weren't kids could latch unto. They still dealt with interesting topics and subject matter.

Beast Wars was a toy commercial and it still had good stories and characters with some depth. It was still well written and an adult could get something out of it.

Now I won't say Build Fighters is bad, but it is quite diffrent then other Gundam shows and it is the most obvious attempt at pleasing children and being a toy commercial. There is nothing wrong with that. If you're the kind of person who enjoys Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon then fine, but thats the thing. Thats where Build Fighters fits in. other Gundam shows did not fit there.

The subject matter dosen't appeal to me and I hope the next Gundam actually tries to rekindle what Gundam use to be. Basic war stories that where fantasy military realism with giant robots.

To answer your question about the premise, they are actually fighting with the models. Everything they put on the gunpla translates into the gunpla battle. They aren't just playing a videogame; the plavsky particles actually allow the models to do everything you see them doing. Gunpla battle is closer to Battlebots than the Gundam VS series of videogames. In fact, a huge part of the show's plot is the mystery of what the plavsky particles are and how they work, which is what the show is currently working towards revealing. A character has also entered with a giant armor and got beaten. The show even answered that by showing that skill and the way the gunpla is built and modified is way more important than simply picking a gunpla based off of a stronger mobile suit.

Additionally, a good deal of that is made clear early on. You say that it doesn't make sense and that the show "has no other palpable qualities beyond its marketing potential" but since you asked a question about something the show plainly demonstrates in the first few episodes, I find it hard to believe that you've even really watched it. It seems like you just hated it once you found out what it was and were so convinced by your fan rage that it was going to be awful no matter what, and as a fan of fiction in general, that's a horrible outlook to have.

Gundam Build Fighters is exactly what Gundam fans deserve. The animosity among the community is ridiculous enough as it is.
As for Universal Century, it's already saturated enough without having to remake its stories just to get public interested in it again.

At this point, what I really want to see out of this franchise are more contributions by non-Japanese.
