Hiroshima Animation Season 2022

Hiroshima Artist In Residence (H-AIR)
Invited Artists Confirmed!


A new animation festival Hiroshima Animation Season is pleased to announce that three artists have been selected for our residence program “Hiroshima Artist in Residence (H- AIR)”.

The invited artists this time are Mahboobeh Kalaee (Iran), Nata Metlukh (USA), and Sakura Koretsune (Japan). The three artists, who are internationally acclaimed with remarkable achievements, will stay in Hiroshima City for six months starting from May or June, depending on the availability of artist's arrival to Hiroshima, and work on their new projects and interact with the Hiroshima citizens.

Mahboobeh Kalaee has won numerous awards, including the Best Film Award at the Fantoche International Animation Film Festival for a stop-motion film "The Fouth Wall" last year. The film was also awarded the Grand Prix of the Animation category at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival which was recently announced, and she is attracting a great attention in Japan as well.

Nata Metlukh is a Ukrainian-born, U.S. based artist well known for GIF animations from her observations of people's everyday life, and she has over 27,000 followers on Instagram. With her astute observation, "awkward," a film depicting common everyday awkward moments, was awarded the Best Short Film of the Year at PromoFest in Spain in 2020.

Sakura Koretsune is an artist who focuses on human activities, whaling, hunting culture, and the spiritual culture of the sea, and conducts fieldwork in Japan and abroad, creating works such as a little press and textile-based works. She participated in many exhibitions in Tohoku (''northeast'' region of Japan) and Hokkaido areas, including Yamagata Biennale and a solo exhibition at Rias Ark Museum of Art. She will be making a first animation in her hometown of Hiroshima, in the field area of the Seto Inland Sea.

Artist Profile

Mahboobeh Kalaee
Born in Iran 1992. Graduated MA Animation Directing at Tehran University of Arts (Faculty of Cinema and Theatre) in 2020. She is a 2D animator, author, illustrator, graphic designer, and director of experimental and short animations.

Overview of project
“Ship for Our Relation”
The film is an animated documentary about the journey of an Iranian miniature book and the connections that their characters make with the real world trough mixed media technique. The connection between Persian and Japanese words as a material for focusing to study form and meaning of the words and how can improve their storytelling potential with animate.

Massage to Hiroshima City
Being in Japan and discovering the new point of views in observing the world was one of my dreams. Having direct contact with Japanese culture and civilization will be very exciting for me, and I will describe my experience in my film. I'm sure the lovely Hiroshima is full of new ideas for any filmmaker.

Nata Metlukh

Born in Ukraine 1982. Currently living in San Francisco, USA. Studied classical animation at Vancouver Film School in 2014, Graduated MA at Estonian Academy of Arts in 2018, where she studied film direction under Priit Parn supervision.

Overview of project
“Off-Time”
The film will be an animated short film featuring time in different aspects. The goal is to explore time-related themes such as:
urban rush in the big city, the urge to be productive all the time,
different time perceptions, speeding up time when we get older, etc.

Massage to Hiroshima City
I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to live and work in Hiroshima City, and to be able to immerse myself into the local culture. This invaluable experience will spark new ideas for the future works and will be a great promotion for the independent animation filmmaking.

Sakura Koretsune

Born in Ondo-cho, Kure City, Hiroshima 1986. 2010 University of Alaska Fairbanks Bachelor of Fine Arts, Art: Painting, USA. 2017 M.F.A., Tohoku University of Art & Design.

Overview of project
“Eyes of hippocampus”
I was born and raised in the Seto Inland Sea, and I was inspired by my original landscape of "landscapes moved by water" to create an animation/video work that mixes animation and real landscapes.
I will also incorporate ideas from the fieldwork in the creation of our work. I will use animation techniques such as zoetrope, para-para manga, and stop-motion animation of fabric works to create a three-dimensional work with animation elements, like a portable device. The moving animation of the device will be set up in the city,

Massage to Hiroshima City
For many years now, I have been living away from my hometown in the Seto Inland Sea. The more I visit different places and the more time passes, the more I think about the beauty and specialness of the sea of Hiroshima. I am very much looking forward to being able to work with everyone and create art while reconnecting with Hiroshima, which is my original landscape.
