Shiki's Ryu Fujisaki Launches New Legend of the Galactic Heroes Manga

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Manga based on Yoshiki Tanaka's space opera novel series debuts on October 8

This year's 44th issue of Shueisha's Young Jump magazine is announcing on Thursday that Ryū Fujisaki (Shiki, WaqWaq) will launch a new Legend of the Galactic Heroes manga in the magazine's next issue, which Shueisha will publish on October 8. The first 60-page chapter will have a color opening page.

The magazine teases:

"This is a cosmic scale shock!

Two heroes rise to stake a claim on galactic hegemony!"

The manga is based on Yoshiki Tanaka's space opera novel series of the same name. The story follows the epic conflict between the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance, as well as the personal stories of Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the Alliance's Yang Wen-Li. Viz Media's Haikasoru imprint has licensed the original novel series and plans to release the first three novels in spring 2016. Sentai Filmworks has licensed the video anime series for home video.

Production I.G will produce a new anime adaptation of the novels. The anime is slated for 2017.

The novels have already previously been adapted into manga. Katsumi Michihara published the Ōgon no Tsubasa (Golden Wings) prequel in 1986, and the Shirogane no Tani (Silver Valley) prequel in 1987. She also launched the Legend of the Galactic Heroes manga series in Tokuma Shoten's Shonen Captain magazine in 1988, and concluded it in 1992. She launched the latest manga series based on the novels in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Ryū magazine in 2006, which is currently ongoing.

Viz Media published all 23 volumes of Fujisaki's Hoshin Engi manga from 2007 to 2011, and all four volumes of his WaqWaq manga in English from 2009 to 2010. Hoshin Engi inspired the 1999 Soul Hunter TV anime series. His Shiki manga inspired a TV anime series adaptation in 2010. FUNimation Entertainment streamed the series as it aired, and released the series on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012.
