GungHo Online Entertainment announced its new game, Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, in their New Title Unveiling on Thursday. This will be a collaboration between GungHo Online and Nintendo, using characters, settings, and themes from Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers video game franchise. GungHo also debuted an announcement trailer:
The story of the game begins when a mysterious "Drop" appears in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Bowser and others attempt to use it for themselves. Princess Peach is kidnapped, and to save her, Mario must go on a journey and perform puzzle battles.
The gameplay will be reminiscent of the Puzzle and Dragons smartphone game, but the game's producer was careful to say that many visual, audio, and gameplay elements would change. The game supports both StreetPass and local multiplayer.
The game is scheduled for release on April 29, and will retail at 4,000 yen (about US$34) with both physical and digital releases.
The original Puzzle & Dragons is a social puzzle game for iOS and Android devices. Gung Ho Online Entertainment released the "puzzle RPG" in Japan in February 2012, and in the U.S. in November 2012. The game has more than 32 million downloads in Japan, and won the top award at the Mobile Project Award 2012, and the top award in game design at the CEDEC Awards 2012. A spin-off titled Puzzle and Dragons Z has previously been released for the 3DS on December 2013, and has a North American release date announced.
