Pretty annoying that it won't be available on the other 3DS.

I like how senile Nintendo has become. They truly live in a different world.

Am I missing something? Why would anyone pay for old SNES games in the era of emulation?

Same reason why people pay for anime in the era of Bittorrent.

I'm so excited! I'll have to go buy a New 3DS just so I can rebuy games I got bored with 20 years ago!
This Direct was a flop.

Actually attempts to homebrew SNES games onto the 3DS have been failures. For instance the Youtube hack is a crashathon and doesn't lead to a pleasant experience. For some reason the regular 3DS just doesn't work with SNES titles.

Because everyone doesn't have a PC or the know how to run an emulator.

I was beginning to wonder if/when Nintendo was ever going to implement it. Apparently there are reasons pre-New 3DS models can't run SNES games, but still it's pretty stupid that I would have to buy a new 3DS console just to play them. I never understood why they hadn't done it from the beginning otherwise. I already own a 3DS XL and a 2DS. On top of that, I'll just play SNES games using emulation on my laptop if I want to play some SNES games.
Not related to the topic totally, but I do have a few questions:
3DS games being released after the release of the new 3DS & 3DS XL will only play on the new 3DS consoles I take it? For example, would I need to purchase a new 3DS model just to be able to play Pokemon Sun & Moon coming out at the end of the year? Would it play on my 2DS at all, or with just limited functionality? How does this work? I don't think I ever saw anything explaining it after the new 3DS was originally announced over a year ago. If I have to buy a 3rd 3DS model just to be able to play one of my favorite franchises, that's kinda shitty Nintendo but whatever. If so, I'll probably just sell my 3DS XL on eBay anyways and get some of my money back.

Sun & Moon is likely going to be compatible for all 3DS models though Nintendo could likely implement some amiibo mechanics for anyone playing the game on the New 3DS.

So... some newer 3DS games won't work on the old 3DS models? They all work, but old 3DS models obviously don't support amiibo functionality and newer games won't run as smoothly or look as good on the old 3DS models? If you put a recent 3DS game released after the new 3DS XL release into an original 3DS console it won't turn on? I'd love to know the specifics if anyone knows.

Plenty of emulators for Android devices. Main drawback is using touch screen controls.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS is the only game I know of that's not compatible with non "new 3DS" models. As for newer more recent games being incompatible on an original 3DS they are compatible and look fine on the older systems.

What happens if you own an apple product that doesn't use Android?

There's a tiny handful of 3DS games that only run on New 3DS. The only two I can actually remember are Xenoblade Chronicles and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Both of them are ports (and are marked as New 3DS exclusives to help avoid confusion), so you're not missing out on a tonne unless 3DS is the only platform you have. I wouldn't expect there to be many New 3DS exclusives anyway. It's only a fraction of the userbase and it's not like DSi (basically the last gen equivalent to a New 3DS) got much in the way of notable support like that.
That said, there are a healthy amount of games that make use of the New 3DS hardware, but also run on the original models. If you're playing on the older models you usually get longer load times and slightly worse technical details (frame rate, draw distance, effects, etc.) in comparison. It's not a huge night and day difference, though. I'd expect future Pokemon games to only be "New 3DS-enhanced."
I think there's supposed to be an adapter for the original 3DSes to use Amiibo btw.
