Well Here it is, Rahul and his stupidity. He forbids remote recording (now only limited to sequel or a co-production shows), low paying staff and VAs refuse to negotiate to union and now THIS ?!! Testing an A.I ?!! Later, twitter will had a meltdown about this.

CR is only the company, and need to be saved/improved the one who made its reputation worse is Rahul.

I’m glad the article reminded me about the debacle with that other anime’s poor quality subtitles. Sucks to think that may have been foreshadowing.

This is why I've been sticking to mainly watching older anime lately. Ones that aren't on Crunchyroll of course.

...some of them on YouTube because nobody's license rescued super milk chan yet and the rest on library rental DVDs

Sony's too much of a cheapskate for me to spend my money on them

It's like Crunchyroll is daring us to remain customers at this point.

I hate this. No matter how accurate the subs are, there's something about the use of ai in something like translation that just doesn't appeal to me.

Are the subtitles on crunchyroll's blu-ray releases the same ones they use for simulcasts? It would be bad enough to have subs generated by ai when streaming, but buying the blu-ray only to get subs made by ai would be even worse.

I'll leave this here...

CEO of Crunchyroll is advocating for AI translation. Pretty much to be expected from a soulless businessman, but I have to ask, does this man have even the first clue about what the company he is leading actually does? Because these are some baffling takes

Like this entire drivel? Crunchyroll literally popularized the anime simulcast! They've always gotten materials in advance of JP airing and have put episodes out the moment said JP airing finishes. Any further delay from there is purely contractual 99.999% of the time.

Obviously the real reason he's interested in AI translation is money. He wants to get TL done even cheaper, even though Crunchyroll's loc staff is already paid in peanuts. He doesn't care one bit about quality; he's probably never even watched an episode of anime in his life.

If they use AI for anything, I won't be watching it legally. A bad translation is often worse than no translation at all. Machine translation especially struggles with Japanese because it's a context-heavy language where you say more with less. Nevermind things that don't really have an English equivalent, such as personal pronouns (Boku, watashi, ore, etc. - One of the most famous examples of this is found in Your Name.) and keigo.

This is, quite frankly, the worst idea Crunchyroll has ever had.

Congrats on being the reason for only my second comment on this site, Crunchyroll. Glad I'm unsubbing from you.

Edit: Yeah, this was the (very large) straw that broke the camel's back for me. As soon as I finished typing this, I went and unsubscribed from Crunchyroll. Then I wrote about three paragraphs worth of stuff in their exit survey.

I'd only been considering it before when they announced that Funimation was closing and their prices were increasing. This article made me certain of my choice.

They often are, yes. They get another round of QC checks and stuff, but they're not new translations unless something big happened (like the footage changing drastically or licensor requiring something)...

Welp, time to see how craptastic the subs get. Like, they already got flak for that garbage AI sub of that one anime from the Fall season and they thought that that could be expanded?

I mentioned this is another thread, but since it's more applicable and on-topic here, I'll leave this quote again from a separate interview Purini did for Variety's weekly podcast this same week when asked about the potential impact of AI on the anime industry and its applications for subtitling and dubbing:

Purini: “Yeah, Like, like you said, AI is going to be a huge impact across the various industries. Our partners in Japan are experimenting and looking into what that means for anime production. But anime is a very is hand drawn still, and it's a very age old traditional creative process. So I'm sure there will be impact, but it is early days to understand what the impact would be on the production side of anime.

Like you said, we are also looking to see what role AI could play in a lot of different areas within our organization. Subtitling is an area where we've been experimenting and we think that there is a role for AI to play as we look at speech to text, so we think it could help us bring shows to fans quicker, bring in more languages. Again, like I said, we are in early experimentation.

On the other side, on the dubbing side, I think that the AI technology, we don't believe the air technology is there yet in terms of being able to put into dubbing, because the dubbing process itself is a very creative process. Given that it is we're not just translating and dubbing, we're adapting the script because you have to localize for the local culture, local humor, you have to synchronize the lip laps to the language because we don't get to go back and reanimate the shows. So again, we don't think the technology is there yet, but we're also experimenting with AI in other ways. As I mentioned earlier. Discovery is a big issue, just as much in anime as it is in other general entertainment shows. There is a lot of content and trying to connect audience with the right content that they would like to watch at the right time is a big is an important priority for us, and we believe AI and generative AI could play a role, so we're testing and experimenting there as well.”

Around the 40:41 mark - https://omny.fm/shows/strictly-business/anime-streamer-crunchyroll-is-a-rare-svod-success

But yeah, the implication of AI subtitling is so damn bleak and I agree with the person who said it practically feels like Crunchyroll is daring us to remain customers at this point. I am not going to pay for AI-translated streaming, absolutely not.

They barely pay their translators as is, they sometimes struggle to even get episodes with subs out, and now they're adding AI's!?
