IMO, this arc is peak, but I know a lot of people prefer the shorter stories, and this is the longest arc so far.

Rip I was afraid someone would say that lmao. I thought the demons arc was the worst in the show easily, and on first impression this looks just as shounen as that. Ah well hopefully the main characters can carry it.

If it helps, this arc introduces 10+ characters, and I thought they were all likable and/or interesting.

I definitely think this arc will benefit a lot from being animated and it looks phenomenal from the trailer.

I feel like the OP might be divisive though.

The last one is still divisive, so this'll be right at home, I think.

This series replacing "Yusha" as the OP will be about like Oshi no Ko replacing "Idol" when it gets a second season. Few are the anime series which can replace such high-quality OPs without some kind of letdown.

But "Yusha" is the perfect encapsulation of the 16 episodes so far (the lyrics literally describe the underlying themes of this part of the series!), and the focus of the series does seem like it's going to shift a bit with this upcoming arc, so maybe it's time for a change.

Anyway, very much looking forward to what this arc can offer.

EDIT:

This is news to me. The lyrics couldn't fit the series any better, so I'm unclear how it could possibly be divisive.

Personally, I like it quite a bit. But there's always been complaints that it's too pop, that it doesn't fit the tone of the series, that they should have gone with something more like Mushoku Tensei, that they didn't use the right instruments, etc.

Again, not my opinion. From my understanding, the song was written for the series itself, and I don't think every fantasy OP needs to sound the same, or be in the same genre. I thought the animation and the music worked beautifully for the show.

Even if I like the episodic stuff more, I did end up liking this arc a lot more than the first despite being way longer, so I'm looking forward to it being animated!

For me, it helps that this arc (some mild structural and direction spoilers) spoiler[is split into three mini-arcs and doesn't involve demons at all.]

I'm definitely one of those that doesn't think the music itself fits that well with the vibe of the series, except for maybe the Aura the Guillotine arc, regardless of the lyrics. I think the song is okay, though kinda generic sounding, just... prefer the ending theme a lot more on that front, even if that it's own brand of generic.

Hahaha yeah not helping the case at all, that's wayyyy too many characters all at once. But hey I hope I end up feeling similarly!

Thank you, that honestly does a lot to help dissuade my misgivings! Aside from the Aura/Demon's arc, which I thought was a pretty bad low point if I'm honest (and I'm sick of seeing memes about Aura's silly power), I've absolutely adored the show, so I'm glad to hear that!

I'll also raise my hand as someone that really did not like the OP at all and felt the music and style of it was so badly mismatched with the show, couldn't care less about the lyrics when the actual music is so tonally out of sync with the show for me. I watched it for episode 2 (Skipped it for episode 1 because I wanted to go in fresh), didn't like it at all and have skipped it every single time since then. Glad to see it go and for us to hopefully get something better. Also agree the ending was so much better and it's not even close.

I personally really enjoy the opening, but I get it, it doesn’t necessarily sound like a fantasy opening.

It’s like the new Rurouni Kenshin anime using a rock/rap opening.

Oh, the ED is on my all-time-great list for EDs (though more for the incredible visuals and the way they sync with the music than for the song). Will be very disappointed to see it go.

As for the OP, I guess I can understand the complaint you mention (and which was echoed by a couple of others). Admittedly, I wasn't impressed by it myself the first couple of times I listened to it. "Yusha" grew on me as the series progressed and the depth and relevancy of its lyrics became more evident, however, to the point that I no longer even find the music to be a tonal mismatch. As much a sentimentality is a key thematic component of the series, I don't think a somber-sounding OP would have fit.

(And for the record, I always thought that the OP for Mushoku Tensei s2 was a tonal mismatch. It leaned way more into sentimentality in both song and visuals than the series did.)

Yeah, I agree a somber opening wouldn't fit either, just would like something to lean into the sorta laid-back, somewhat deadpan tone of the series better.

No prob! There's also a later arc that I can't remember the name of (spoiler[City of Gold or something? since that's the setting)] that features a demon that I think is one of the coolest and most interesting characters so far, and goes a long way to rectify some of my earlier misgivings with how the demons are handled. Though I'll have to wait to see how the arc resolves to fully give judgement on it, since the official translation on Viz Manga isn't finished with it yet.

The series is a shounen series so why wouldn't it look like a shounen series?

I don't think demography is a problem but the change of genre just like when the comedy Gintama turns into fight arcs so forced that Gintoki loses as much blood as Pegasus Seiya and still win the Battle without any reasonable rule

Personally I quite like the opening credits song, originally I thought it clashed but the more I heard it the more it grew on me and the visuals and symbolism is perfect.

There's one particular bit of the opening that matches with the crescendo of the song that I will definitely miss. The point where the other three members of the heroes party are on the left of screen and Fern and Stark are on the right and the image of each grouping recedes past their respective edges of the screen exposing Frieren in the middle.
It's really neat little piece of visual symbolism that perfectly summarizes Frieren's situation, the past fading away in time, the future moving forever forward in time and Frieren forever stuck between the two.
