Hmm. Strictly anime side, it stayed largely the same since last, from the article;
...Wait, there's still the inflation in US to account for (2021-2022 8%, 2021-2023 13.3%) so the hard value of the new figure is actually less. |

Interesting that North Korea of all places still fell into the 10-50 contracts green bracket, despite not even having bilateral relations with Japan. I wonder how that even works when not even Netflix works there (I'm assuming alot of the contracts on the green countries are just Netflix originals with worldwide distribution).

Surprised to see Spain with more than 300 industry contracts but Latin America in pink being a much larger market. Even Italy is a bigger market than Spain. As a Spanish user I can tell that something is wrong with those numbers lol

That's because Spain is both a member of the EU and a NATO country and by default, Japan had a better relationship in terms of business, not to mention being a legal market, since the laws are more strongly enforced. And while Latin America is bigger in both size and population, the region lags on both law enforcement (having most of the countries using the Napoleonic code, when the laws are written in stone, rather than being changed when needed, like those from the NATO countries and the Anglosphere) and piracy is still rampant. |

I can't talk about Spain, but as for Italy I think manga are much more popular here than anime, and I guess several people from my Country don't bother watching Italian-dubbed anime since the dubbing situation has gotten worse and worse over the years, generally speaking. |

These days, the market size that matters is install base, in other words, nr of clients subscribed to a streaming platform. Now, CR doesn't publish data on this but while Spain is a smaller market than many Latin American countries, the average wage is higher than anywhere in Latin America, which is particularly important for things whose price scales terribly with local purchasing power like streaming platforms (case in point, it costs more to subscribe to CR where I live than in the US, despite the average salary being less than half). That is to say, Latin America (and many others) have a rampant piracy problem, which is an ever bigger issue with Anime, since the demographic skews young and they know how to sail the seven seas. This in turn affects how much platforms are willing to invest back into less surefire licenses. |

1. Portugal is also a EU & NATO country and has "pink" numbers. Population matters, too. 2. Spain has 47 million people (I accept not everyone is buying manga), which make us the 3rd biggest Spanish-speaking country* after México and Colombia. 3. There is an actual boom of manga here. 165,000 people just attended the annual 4-days 29th Manga Barcelona convention. Quite many booths fill to the brim with figures, plastic models, clothing… everything. And pirated merch is technically not allowed (dunno how strict they are, but I've seen booths closed down by the organization due to that). 4. What surprises me is seeing Italy in a second rank, as their comic publishing industry is way, way bigger than Spain's. * as a national language (even with shared status). |

It's hard to explain how and why it's gotten worse and I'm just the audience, not working in the field, but the difference is noticeable. I guess older dubbing actors were generally also regular actors (and especially, stage actors) and more skilled overall. In any case, I don't bother with dubbing anymore in general since it's always better to listen to the original language (there are translation, localization, and adaptation issues to keep in mind too). |
