Really loving this show so far, easily one of my favorites this season! Although I do kinda wonder why the ballet instructor doesn't push Junpei to another form of dance besides ballet? Modern or even jazz seems like it would be a more well-rounded fit for him given the stuff he doesn't like about ballet is so prominent in that field, and the stuff he does love (self-expression, storytelling, more advanced moves like grand jetés) can be found elsewhere. Or she could at least encourage him to try different classes out for himself since he's so new to everything?

I've been thinking that too. It seems like he'd find becoming a Bob Fosse type dancer more fulfilling that molding himself into the rigid shape of classical ballet.

I'm really enjoying this so far, but it's clear at this point that I will never get used to those slipped-contacts arcs in their irises. It bugs me on so many different levels.

And biblically accurate ballerinas.

I don't understand what this means, or how it relates to the image it was paired with. Confused

As for why Junpei is not being pushed towards other dances, it's because he wants to do ballet, really. That's his passion, not other types of dance. And there are many variations of ballet, just because classical ballet may not be his true calling doesn't mean he can't end up doing something that is still ballet but more modern/abstract - in fact the variation that grabbed him way back when he was small wasn't even classical ballet. But even so he must know the basics, like with all art - you have to know the basics, have to learn them, even if it's to know what you're throwing away to do your own thing. (Also, I'll just shut up at this point because I'm up to date with the manga, but without any spoilers, Junpei's career so far is an interesting one.)

I'd guess it's a reference to biblically accurate angels? Like, in art and popular culture they're always depicted as preternaturally beautiful winged humans, but in the actual Bible, weeelll.

Ah, that makes sense. I wasn't thinking about angels, and couldn't recall any ballerinas in the Bible, though I haven't read every word of it. Thanks.

The dancing scenes, as well as the entirety of episode 5, were directed by Hajime Ootani from SHAFT

So ironically, The Gymnastics Samurai doesn't have much to do with it besides maybe some animators and the involvement of Hisatoshi Shimizu as assistant director.
